How Essential Oils Transform Your Mood

Scents are powerful— they can bring back memories, remind us of people, transport us to certain places, and even affect our mood. Aromatherapy— the use of scents or aromas to improve physical and emotional health— is widely used throughout the world and has been around for centuries.

So, why do we associate scents with memories and feelings? When we smell something, it travels up the nose and into the limbic system in our brain. This area is responsible for our emotions and memory. Aromatherapy takes advantage of this process to use scents and essential oils to activate certain emotions and moods, such as relaxation. In this article, we will cover some ways that different essential oils can impact mood.

De-Stress and Relax.

Many essential oils help you feel relaxed and calm, reducing feelings of anxiety and stress. Lavender is well-known for its calming properties, which is why many people use it before bed to relax and have a more restful sleep. Ylang Ylang is not only a popular scent for perfumes, but it also decreases feelings of anxiety, stress, and even anger. Rose oil is another beautiful scent with calming properties. Studies have shown that rose oil improves both physical and emotional signs of stress and anxiety. Participants who used rose oil had a decrease in blood pressure, felt more relaxed, and their sympathetic nervous system was no longer constantly activated.

Energy Boost.

Sometimes, we need a boost of energy to help us power through a tiring day or just to feel more alive and energised. Forget the caffeine— essential oils such as peppermint, rosemary, grapefruit, and other citruses such as lime and lemon are excellent energy boosters. Rosemary helps reduce fatigue, and its fresh herb smell provides lots of energy. Grapefruit and other citrus scents are refreshing and instantly make you feel awake. They will also improve your mood, so you will be more motivated to go out and get moving.

Focus.

When you need that extra help to focus while studying or working, essential oils such as peppermint and eucalyptus make you feel alert, focused, and ready to go. The fresh, minty aromas are definite ways to wake you up and invigorate you. Rosemary is an energy booster, but you can also use it before a big test or presentation— this essential oil is known for its ability to improve memory! Another herb that improves concentration is basil. It can help clear your mind, improve attentiveness and ability to focus, and even helps with memory.

Happiness.

Who couldn’t use a bit of extra happiness? In general, citrus scents are uplifting and energising, but some are more researched than others. Sweet orange and mandarin essential oils are known for uplifting your mood and increasing feelings of happiness. Jasmine is a calming essential oil, but it is also widely used against depression. Bergamot is also effective for uplifting mood and reducing feelings of depression, but it also boosts energy levels— it’s the perfect combination!

There are so many incredible essential oils out there, all with their own uses and beautiful scents. Many of these oils have overlapping benefits, which is why you might wish to create a blend of essential oils. Experiment with them, have fun, and watch your mood improve!
